Had the most enjoyable afternoon last Thursday capturing Jazz musician Stephanie Legg in Greenwich at Oliver’s Jazz and Wine Bar.
As I crept down the narrow staircase into its shadowy rooms, I suddenly teleported into 40’s and early 50’s bohemia. I couldn’t quite decide whether I was in The Talented Mister Ripley, a Ginsberg story or an extract from Patti Smith’s Just Kids. The place was empty yet I could easily picture a swarm of introverted beatniks, aspiring writers, chic art-school students, painters, performance artists, hip lovers, singers, players and dancers come together, come to life, come to play in this dusty underworld, glowing through the cigarette smoke. Gorgeous slam poets serenading everyone with their delicious words over the light tapping of symbols and catching piano keys.
